Excerpt: The idiot I collided with was easy to ignore, but Eli was a different story. I could either stab him in the eyes with my cocktail umbrella or give him a sharp retort. "Thanks for the drink. You'd better go back to your buddies and file your report," I snapped, turning my back on him.

"Wow," he murmured, staring at me in astonishment for a moment. "I thought the storm was coming next week. What's with the sudden cold front?"

If he hadn’t been such an immature jerk, his words might have made me smile. Instead, they only served to further irritate me.

"Aren't we done yet?" I shot back with biting sarcasm. "Mission accomplished. You’ve managed to engage the 'heavy girl' in conversation, and she’s responded. Ha. Ha."

"Posey, I don’t have—”

“No maturity? No real sense of humor? No three functioning brain cells? No guts to act like an adult? No time for personal development? Yeah, I noticed. See you around."

"What the hell are you talking about?" he grumbled.

"Do you need to f*** me to win this bet? That might be tricky considering your little... equipment."

Eli looked at me, amusement and confusion mixed on his face. Surprisingly, he didn’t respond with anger, even after my insult. "What are you talking about, lady?" he asked, his voice surprisingly calm.

"Here you are, a guy who looks like you, standing right next to me and striking up a conversation." I shook my head, growing more agitated. "Do you even realize what you’re missing with your stupid games? I'm a damn good-looking woman, I cook like a gourmet chef, and I can do and say things that would make you break a sweat. But this isn’t a rom-com. Plus, I’ve lost all interest in you."

I took a deep breath, assessed him with a cool stare, and intended to turn away. But Eli caught my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze.

The touch was too intimate, too intense. Too exhilarating.

"If you think I’m talking to a damn beautiful woman because of a bet, that says more about you than it does about me."

I squinted at him. "What do you mean by that?"

"There’s only one person passing judgment here, and it’s not me."
